"Lights" is a character driven story about brotherhood, patriotism, love, art and how these ideas shape our identities and drive us to do incredible things in life. "Lights" will portray the love of filmmaking, the love of family, the love of two brothers for the same woman, and above all the love for one's country.  It is a sweeping story that will captivate audiences.

Motivation Behind The Title

The film's title "Lights" comes from the idea that light is a creative force. Light represents a genesis for all things. The first thing in the universe was light, life grows with light, new ideas are represented by light, and most importantly film is constructed with light.

The title is clean, simple and quickly brings a certain brand of mysterious imagery to mind that is just as open to discovery as it is expressive of the nature of film itself.

Synopis

In 1921, two Slovak-American brothers Jerry and Daniel Siakel return to Czechoslovakia to direct the first Slovakian film. The movie is about the classic tale of Janosik, the famous bandit who died for his people. But when the American censors declare the hero’s death in the movie’s ending “too violent”, Jerry is forced to re-shoot a new “happy” ending behind his brother’s back. In doing this, Jerry betrays not only the story, but his brother, and his people that trusted him. The brothers later retire to America and never speak to each other again. But in 1968, a damaged copy of the Janosik film is re-discovered in Chicago by Daniel’s widow. Jerry must decide if he will return to his homeland to restore the film for his brother and risk re-exposing himself to a new generation as “the man who ruined the Janosik legend”. But fear is not the only thing that stands in Jerry’s way: the Warsaw Pact has just invaded Czechoslovakia.

The Project

The film genre is a historical/epic romantic drama, a fictionalized account of events based on actual people and their deeds, and will portray the love of filmmaking, the love of family, the love of two brothers for the same woman, and above all the love for one's country.

The company desires name talent for principle acting roles, thereby adding to the film's commercial value and audience appeal.

Historical Fiction

According to Publishers Weekly, historical fiction is "a nimble genre that works its way into all corners of the storytelling ecosystem.” So what’s the appeal of historical fiction for the movie going public? For viewers, it’s the chance to learn history in an entertaining way, to gain insight into what life was like in another era, or to enjoy a new twist on familiar events or characters.

“Lights” is designed to engage global audiences and provide international appeal because:

  • The subject matter and the idea of the film is something that people from variety of cultures can relate to; an adventure filled love story with themes of betrayal, family, liberty, and happiness.
  • The interpretation of the story is set in a fiscally appealing Historical/Epic Romantic Drama genre. Based on recent Hollywood trends, attractive time periods of the 1920’s and 1960’s paired with the genre provides the most promising return.
  • The cast of “Lights” will enhance the commercial and worldwide appeal. Hollywood actors tend to have a greater global appeal.
  • The narrative and visual style will directly appeal to filmgoers: a classic three-arc structure; easily readable story that people all over the world can understand and be touched by; sympathetic characters the audience can identified with; the main character, who despite all obstacles achieves his goal.
