How We're Different

History of Soccer in St. Louis

America’s First Soccer Capital
Soccer Made in St. Louis is the first comprehensive history of the game in St. Louis. Starting with the first reported game in 1875, Soccer Made in St. Louis covers the history, playing styles, and evolution of the world’s most popular sport in the city that produced generations of native-born players who won 89 national championships, stocked professional and U.S. national teams, and sent 38 of their number into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame. A masterpiece by Author and longtime St. Louis soccer writer Dave Lange.  Buy your copy today! http://www.soccermadeinstlouis.com/Soccer_Made_in_St._Louis/Home.html

St. Louis Soccer Reputation
St. Louis has long had a reputation as being one of America's soccer hotbeds, and is home to what is arguably the richest soccer history in the nation. In addition to being the former home of several professional teams, including the St. Louis Stars of the NASL, St. Louis has a strong tradition of prep and select soccer, which is followed very closely by many people in the city. It has been suggested that prep soccer in St. Louis enjoys a similar following to prep hockey in Minnesota. The Saint Louis University men’s soccer team has made 16 NCAA Final Four appearances and has won 10 national championships. The team consistently ranks in the Top 10 of all Division I soccer teams in attendance. Of most pride to many St. Louisans was the 1950 World Cup team, which defeated England 1-0, in what is perhaps the greatest upset in World Cup history.

Five of the eleven players on the team were from St. Louis, including many from the historically Italian neighborhood known as The Hill. This event was chronicled in the 2005 film The Game of Their Lives (released on DVD as The Miracle Match). Noteworthy is the fact that every U.S. World Cup team in history has included at least one St. Louisan on its roster, and 29 St. Louisans have been inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.  Several current American soccer stars hail from St. Louis, including Brad Davis, Chris Klein, Pat Noonan, Matt Pickens, Steve Ralston, Mike Sorber, Tim Ream, and  Taylor Twellman.

It’s important to point out that her vivid memory growing up and celebrating Bat Mitzvah, a Jewish tradition with peers and childhood friends endures. The sense of responsibility bestowed on teenagers by the Bat Mitzvah traditional practices has compelling influence and that is what has made LaWanda Asuquo an enviable think tank in business, professional, and other entrepreneurial endeavors in her adult life. Bat Mitzvah is a Jewish celebration for teenage boys and girls ages 12 or 13 to be responsibility, responsive, and respect laws in their transformational stage into adulthood. This bears credence to why LaWanda developed a Jewish business ethics and etiquette. She draws strength from her background growing up taking responsibility for her actions and endeavors whether in education, leadership, sports, professional life, and business. Mrs. Asuquo is considered an International liaison for German, Italy, and Nigeria because she could speak their languages and has spent many years working and networking in their cultures. Leadership is another unique attribute synonymous with Mrs. Asuquo’s career excellence. She is a Secretary of workers union Local 476 in DC.
