Enjoy a conversation with an old friend or have one with someone you just met.  Okoboji Brewing Company also offers a homebrew shop and knowledgeable people to discuss any beer-related questions you may have.

Because the beer is not just about us, it's about you...our community.  So come on in, kick off your shoes and enjoy some great beer with us at Okoboji Brewing Company!

How We're Different?

To begin, we are located in the resort area of Northwest Iowa known as Okoboji.  Here, no matter the season, our activities are mostly outdoor related.  To help ensure our beautiful outdoors stay clean and safe, we package our products in a way so you can enjoy them outdoors.

Cans:  We package our beer in 16 oz. cans.  Coming in 4-packs, these beers are designed for you to take them anywhere you want to enjoy a delicious craft beer.  We are also looking into offering some 12 oz. cans in the future.  "You CAN take us anywhere"

The Bullet & Big Brother Growlers:  At Okoboji Brewing Company we offer plastic growlers.  Coming in both 32 oz. and 64 oz. perfect for any amount of sharing you want to do. Our 32oz. and 64 oz. Amber PET growlers, allow you to take craft beer places glass can't go! These bottles are more “green”  than glass.  Studies show that PET leaves far less of a carbon footprint on the environment than glass and tin and can be recycled with any type of plastic.  These bottles are ideal for sports fans, campers, boaters, cyclists or anyone who wants to enjoy your beer where glass is not permitted.

Local, Local, LOCAL:  We strive to use everything we can as locally as we can.  From trying to source our grains and hops to even our yeast.  Yes, you heard that right, our yeast.  We work with a local micro biologist to develop yeast that is from our area.  We then used the local yeast to brew a Berliner Weiss with a taste of Lake Okoboji.  We also use a local coffee roaster for the coffee in our Early Riser Coffee Porter.

R&D System:  We are lucky enough to have a small 1 barrel system.  We use this system to produce some fun and interesting beers.  This allows us to try new beers while also putting it on tap for our patrons to review.  Some of the beers we have done include: Smoked Porter, Sweet Potato Ale, The Stowaway - Helles Lager, Weekend at Grandmas - Ruhbarb and Cardamom Ale, Okoboji Deep - Imperial IPA, Oktoberfest, Midwest Charm - Farmhouse Ale, Oak Aged Sour Brown, Spiced Pumpkin, Oak Aged Barley Wine, and our best, Hell or High Water - Bourbon Imperial Stout aged in a Bourbon Barrel with local honey added!

So, what about the beer?

We produce a wide range of craft beer that we serve in the taproom.  OBC has four year-round offerings planned.  We've worked hard to get these beers ready for your drinking pleasure, but rest assured, there's lots more to come in the way of seasonals, session beers, IPAs and others that we aren't quite ready to talk about yet.  Come on, we've got to keep just a little suspense going!

Boji Beach Golden Rye Ale - 5%ABV:  Summer is a special time in Okoboji, Iowa filled with fun and family activities, boating, skiing and concerts by the Lake.  Boji Beach Golden Rye Ale is light golden in color. It is crisp, smooth with a dry slight bitterness to balance the sweetness of the malt.  The rye adds some bakery qualities which enhances the complexity of this beer.  Nothing hits the spot like a Boji Beach Golden Rye Ale while enjoying all your outdoor activities!

Veneration IPA - 6%ABV:  Here at Okoboji Brewing Company, we have a love for thunderstorms.  Their chaos & commotion demands the type of respect we try to emulate for our community, our patrons, and our craft.  That’s why we created this IPA.  Brewed with the finest malts & several hop varieties, this beer is one to respect.

Shot In The Dark Vanilla Cream Stout - 5.2%ABV:  A dark, rich brew teaming with bitter chocolate and coffee overtones, yet balanced by the sweetness of milk, sugar and REAL VANILLA.  This delicious stout is enjoyable all year round, no matter the temperature outside!

Early Riser Coffee Porter - 6.7%ABV:  Beer for breakfast?  Absolutely!     Brewed with the finest dark roasted malts and locally roasted coffee beans (from the Latern in Sibley, IA) our coffee porter will get your day going.  The bitterness from the coffee pairs excellent with the chocolate roast from the malts.

Traction & Accomplishments

These are exciting times for craft beer in the state of Iowa.  The 2014 Economic Impact of the Craft Beer Industry in Iowa report released in May 2015 shows that the Iowa craft beer industry is expected to triple by 2019.  Production for 2014 was 42,786 barrels and is projected to top 146,000 barrels by 2019, a 259% increase.  The in state consumption of craft beer is expected to increase by the same percentage. Currently craft beer has a 1.2% share of the beer market in Iowa.  This is expected to be over 5% by 2019. We have the opportunity to be at the forefront of this expanding market.  The sales in our taproom have been increasing every year and we have developed a loyal clientele.  Each time we attend a beer festival we gain new fans that inquire as to where they can find our beer.  We had an independent third party perform some marketing research for us.  As a part of their study they performed a blind taste test with another local brewery.  The results were very favorable for OBC as the test groups preferred our beer by a good margin.

What's Next?

What is the next step?  We need funds to help get us to the next level.   What you need to know is that we're currently brewing on a one barrel system which is capable of producing 60-140 gallons of our quality craft beer each month.  Fortunately for OBC we have a fantastic and creative brewer who rarely disappoints.  Unfortunately working on such a small system he can’t keep enough of our beer on tap to satisfy our customers.  We attend many craft beer festivals during the year and are always asked where our beer can be purchased.  We have purchased a 25 barrel system to help meet this internal and external demand.  This system will help get distribution started and keeping your favorites on tap.  We need to raise capital to complete the installation of the 25 barrel system, purchase the initial raw materials to start large scale production, and bring our brewer on full-time to manage the complete brewing process.  This will allow us to achieve our full potential.  Raising this $40,000 is the final step in reaching that goal.

The people that help make it happen!!!

Jared White - Head Brewer and Mess Maker

Crazy Craft Beer Scientist and Explorer

Jared began his brewing endeavors while attending college in NW Iowa. With a scarce selection of craft beer available at the time, home brewing seemed an obvious solution. While his first attempts were feeble at best, the drive to create great beer was born. You know the saying: curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought him back (or something like that). This newfound passion led to brewing at a local restaurant where he normally washed dishes. In that small venue, his eyes were opened to the vast world of craft brewing, and the desire to hone his craft became insatiable. After graduating with a degree in philosophy and marrying his college sweetheart, Jared landed a job at the Lake Superior Brewing Co. in Duluth, MN. There he was humbled by a tremendous education from some of the brightest and most talented minds in the industry. Shortly before the birth of their first child, Jared and his wife moved back to NW Iowa and he has brought his talent and experience to bear the task of making the highest quality craft beers here at OBC.

Donn Martens - CFO and Member Manager

Founder and Inspiration for all our troubles!

Donn’s fusion of passion and experience in leadership and development has now led to the birth of Okoboji Brewing Company. The desire to start a brewery begins with great beer, but for Donn it doesn't stop there. As you would have it, the dream of OBC all started in Donn’s garage while he was attending high school in Marshall, MI. Friday night football games in the fall meant fun with classmates and taking cider and blankets to keep warm. Donn’s cider had just been fermenting in his garage. Then there was the senior chemistry project learning the distilling process by building a still. In the years after high school his passion for creating continued into a hobby of home brewing. Donn’s experience as a CPA puts the financial area in place.
