The war on drugs is far from over.

Whether illegal narcotics, prescription meds taken too frequently or opioids sold on the streets, drugs are just about everywhere.

They're addictive, dangerous and they could make anyone a victim.

This was illustrated all too clearly when a police officer was hospitalized after touching a flyer that was contaminated with fentanyl.

In another instance, a police officer overdosed on fentanyl after brushing its powder off his uniform.

Sadly, this problem is all too common. There are numerous cases of police officers who have been treated for some level of fentanyl exposure.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is more than 30 times more potent than heroin. It is very dangerous and is potentially deadly.

Thus, it is very important for police to be able to identify powders/substances as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Recognizing this challenge, Coda Devices developed products that allow police to field test powders/substances to check if they contain life threatening illicit substances/narcotics.

  • Our devices are the only ones on the market that are able to detect heroin and fentanyl through plastic bags - an essential feature for police jeopardizing their lives by exposure to dangerous drugs
  • Identify up to 4 substances per mixture and their concentration, allowing to link cases together based on the signature cutting agents
  • No need to wait to test a substance - find out what’s in it right now,
  • Hence drastically reducing investigation time!
  • Coda Devices improves the quality of investigations

The heroin epidemic is scarily strong in the United States, killing more people each year than motor vehicle accidents.

Heroin has even taken more lives than the thousands of individuals killed during the deadliest year of the Vietnam War.

Despite this, law enforcement has very limited resources to fight the epidemic.

All too often street heroin is mixed with fentanyl, which is a deadly substance even in small amounts.

On average, care for one overdose patient admitted to ICU reached more than $58,000 in 2009.

By 2015 that expense grew exponentially to $92,408.

Even a brief encounter with fentanyl can land anyone in the hospital.

Consequently, officers are trained to avoid touching it the best they can.

This has led to a time-consuming process for drug testing.

When they encounter a substance (ex: heroin) that could potentially contain fentanyl, they must send it to a lab for analysis.

This process could take weeks or months! In the meantime, the investigation slows to a crawl.

Nearly 80% of heroin users started with prescription opioids.

To put it into perspective:

$700B is the defense budget in the USA in 2018

$19B is NASA budget for 2018

The entire Vietnam War cost $950B in 2011 dollars; in just two years, the opioid crisis would exceed it

Coda Devices has solved this problem by developing devices that provide results in minutes.

Heroin and fentanyl can be detected through plastic bags, which not only improves officer safety - it also speeds up the investigation tremendously!

By being able to identify up to 4 substances per mixture, investigators can link cases together.

This is important because different drug dealers may mix different chemicals with pure narcotics.

As a result, undercover cops can better and more quickly identify the "big fish" based on how pure narcotic is

They can quickly learn about the sources of drugs for each dealer

And, in an effort to clean up the streets, arrest the whole distribution network in a more timely manner

Coda Devices has obtained an exclusive license for coded aperture technology, which has allowed us to build our incredibly groundbreaking devices.

Developed by professor David Brady and his team at Duke University, coded aperture technology allows 30x times more light into the spectrometer through a series of slits (not just through one slit as in traditional Raman spectroscopy).

This increases the signal to noise ratio 5x!

It's also how we're able to confidently identify 4 substances per mixture, including percentage analysis (versus 1-2 substances with traditional Raman spectroscopy).
