Arizona's Wine Industry Potential

The state of Arizona is making considerable economic gains due to the wine industry. In fact, the wine industry is one of the only value-added industries in Arizona seeing substantial gains. According to Wine America, a national wine industry trade association promoting advancement and advocacy of sound public policy, “grapes are the highest value fruit crop in the nation and the sixth-largest crop overall. Grapes account for about 30% of the value of all fruits grown in the U.S.”

In addition, according to the Arizona Wine Growers Association (AWGA), the state’s trade association, in 2004, there were less than 10 wineries in Arizona. Today there are more than 100, actually the number in 2019 was 120, and many more are in the development phase. One of which is Copper Horse Vineyard, LLC. Although as a business we are still in our startup stage, we have just planted 5 acres as a proof of concept.  We are making and selling quality wines that will strengthen the young and growing Arizona wine industry. Many of our first vintages got medals, including 2 golds and 5 silvers.

Local Quality Wines At An Affordable Price

We want to provide quality, local wine at an affordable price, lower than the neighboring competition (mainly California) that can easily be enjoyed at home or in a restaurant. We want to grow grapes locally in a sustainable fashion to produce quality product while helping the economy and preserving the environment. We also want to bring a global vision in wine making to a new area that is still struggling to define itself.  We are trying French Rhone and Spanish grapes as their climate conditions are similar to Arizona.

Although we are not certified yet, we started a full biodynamic production in 2019.

Location. The Vineyard is located in South East Arizona, at the feet of the Chiricahuas mountain range with an Eastern exposition. We are very close to Rodeo, NM, and 50 miles from the Mexican border. The altitude is 4,500 ft.

Future Products and Services

We will offer a complete line of savory wines, white, red, and dessert wines, made available not only at the tasting room, but also online, and hopefully in restaurants using our kegs and perhaps stores in the future. We will also create a club membership to ensure and reward customer loyalty.

As mentioned, there will be a brick and mortar tasting room as a primary point of sale, but the wines will also be available online for customers convenience.

Traction and Accomplishments

We have made considerable headway in bringing our vision to reality. Although, we are still in the start-up stage we have achieved substantial traction, thus far.        (April 2013).

July 2013: Since we planted last April the vines have overgrown their shelters and we removed them. A high fence has been built to keep most rodents, coyotes,  javalinas, deers, cows and bears away. Two owl houses where added to keep rodents and snakes population down. The next step is to put a treillis system in place to support the vines.

In 2014, we added a house on our property, so we can spent more time at the vineyard and getting ready to move permanently.

In March 2015, we added an acre of Tempranillo and Muscat-a-petit-grains. All the vines are growing like crazy, in spite of the lake of water.

In April 2016, we moved permanently on our vineyard.

In 2016 we made our first wine with Sangiovese grape, a Red and a Rosé (made by saignée from the red).

In 2017 we started selling our wines and made more wines (Riesling, Viognier, Grenache, Mourvedre, and a Rhone blend)

In 2018 we got three silver medals for our 2017 Sangiovese.

We also got a prototype robot from France to mow and prune the vineyard.

In 2019 we got a silver medal for our dry Riesling 2017.

We also got a Gold medal for our Grenache 2017 that some call the "Pinot Noir of the High Desert"

we were already sustainable, like in using our horse manure and goats to fertilized the vineyard and a neighbor ducks instead of pesticide. But now we are going one step further by being biodynamic. We uses various local plants teas to spray the vineyard and follow the moon and planets to know when to plants and harvest.
